Why MEat?

Holy Week..

A time for reflections.
A time to appreciate Christ as the loving Saviour who sacrificed His life for the salvation of mankind.
A time for asking for forgiveness and deliverance from all the sins that we have committed the past year. (general absolution)
A time for celebrating the The Paschal mystery ( passion, death, and resurrection of Christ)
A time for fasting and abstinence from meat.

I have nothing against the purposes of the Holy Week my only concern is the fifth item that I listed:

To abstain from meat..

wwwwwhhhhhhaaaaaatttt? Abstain from meat? Why meat?

Obviously I'm a meat lover and a not so fish lover..hehehe

I just don't understand why people have to abstain from meat! In curiosity, I asked a nun (my patient), she explained that meat is a symbol of a luxurious life and only "rich people" eat them. And so, to be one with the sacrifices of Christ one should abstain from meat as a way of sacrifice.

Hmmmm, point well taken, I realized that it is much better to abstain from meat than be nailed on the cross for the sins you did not even commit. Another realization I had after that conversation is that its only 3 days of sacrifice, Jesus never complained of falling three times while carrying a huge, wooden cross all the way to Calvary. So if Jesus never complained on all the hardships He experienced in order for me to be saved from my sins, who am I to complain about not eating meat for three days?

So with this thought I guess I'll just have to wait for Easter Sunday where meat abstinence is not practiced until the Holy Week of next year.

Have a Blessed Holy Week!!
